John Dunbar Kornegay III, “Johnny”, is licensed to practice law in South Carolina and North Carolina. He is from Camden and has lived in Kershaw County for most of his life. He has limited his practice to focus on estate planning; estate administration; trust administration, guardianship/conservatorship matters; business/entity formation; and business transactions. Prior to opening Kornegay Law Firm, LLC, Johnny gained extensive experience in the area of trusts and estates at Todd & Johnson, LLP, in Columbia, SC.

Johnny has been recognized as a Legal Elite of the Midlands by Columbia Business Monthly, Rising Star by Super Lawyers, and One to Watch by Best Lawyers. Johnny co-edited the Book of Estate Planning Questions & Answers, Fourth Edition and An Overview of Estate Settlement in South Carolina. He also has co-authored an article for the National College of Probate Judges Journal discussing South Carolina’s law permitting Transferrable on Death (TOD) vehicle titles. 

Johnny enjoys speaking to groups about estate planning/administration. He has made presentations to  SC LLR, NBI, Kershaw County Young Professionals, and Kershaw County Library groups. 

He has served on numerous boards which include Grace Episcopal Church Vestry, Quaker Cemetery Association, Kershaw County Habitat for Humanity, Central Carolina Technical College (CCTC) Foundation Inc., and the Kershaw County Library Board.

He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina Joseph F. Rice School of Law in 2018, where he was a member of the South Carolina Law Review. Additionally, he was awarded the Albert C. Todd III Estate Planning Award and the Joseph O. Rogers Award. He also received CALI Awards for receiving the highest grades in the following law school classes: Property Law; Wills Trusts and Estates; Evidence; Federal Courts; and English Legal History. Prior to graduating, Johnny was inducted into the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Wig and the Robe.

In addition to holding a law degree, Johnny holds a MA in Human Resources from the Moore School of Business, University of South Carolina and a BA in Experimental Psychology, Cum Laude, from the University of South Carolina. He is a proud graduate of Camden High School. 

Johnny also is a licensed South Carolina Funeral Director.  He currently serves as a part-time associate court probate judge for Kershaw County.

Before his career in law, he worked in the funeral industry, as a roofer, as a human resource consultant, as a mascot for a local fast-food chain, and in the restaurant industry.

In his free time, Johnny likes to fish, hunt, and attempt to play golf. He also  enjoys participating in productions at the Arts Center of Kershaw County.
